A New Teaching

Mark 1:21-29

Read verse 21. Who are “they”? What does the Bible say about “Capernaum”? What is a “synagogue”? Jesus went into the synagogue on the Sabbath. Why on the Sabbath? Jesus went to the synagogue to “teach”. Why is teaching necessary? 

Read verse 22. How did people respond to Jesus’ teaching? How was Jesus’ teaching different from that of the teachers of the law? What is authority? 

Read verses 23-26. What is an “evil spirit”? What does this passage show us about “evil spirits”?  

Read verses 27-28. What do the following expressions indicate about Jesus and his teaching? 

The people were all so amazed;

“What is this?”;

“A new teaching!”;

“And with authority”;

“He gives orders to evil spirits”; 

“And they obey him”; and

“News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee”.
