By What Authority

Matthew 21:23-27

Key verse 21:24

Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question.  If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things…”

 Read verse 23.  What was Jesus doing in the temple courts?  What did the chief priests and elders ask him?  Why did they question his authority (12-17)?

 Read verses 24-25a.  Why did Jesus ask about John’s baptism?  Why is it important to know where John’s baptism came from?  What can we learn about the way to practically accept Jesus’ authority?

 Read verses 25b-27.  Why did the religious leaders decide not to answer Jesus’ question?  What does this show about them?  What kept them from accepting God’s authority, or Jesus’ authority?
