The good news of great joy

Good News of Great Joy

Luke 2:1-20

Key Verse 2:10

This passage says that the birth of Jesus is good news of great joy.

1. Read verses 1-7. What does the Scripture say about the birth place of the Savior to come? (Micah 5:2) Where was Jesus born?  What does this tell us about God who sent the Savior in this way?

** The Savior is to be born in a small town called Bethlehem.

** Bethlehem

** God is faithful to his promise.

2. Read verses 8-11. Verse 11 describes Jesus as: 1) the Savior; 2) the Christ; and 3) the Lord. What does Jesus save men from? What does the Christ mean?

** Jesus saves men from their sins.

** The Christ in Greek means Messiah in Hebrew. Messiah is the one who would restore what the first man Adam lost due to his disobedience to God. For example Adam disobeyed for he doubted God’s love. But Jesus came to demonstrate that God is indeed love, the love which is totally sacrificial, willing to bestow upon his children the highest good.

3. Read verses 12-14.  Verse 14 reads, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men, on whom his favor rests.” What does this passage show us about the Savior born in a manger?

** 1) The Savior came to “reveal” God fully to us, so we would all know God correctly and come back to him in deep conviction of His love for us, particularly his sin forgiving love.

2) His love, especially the love that forgives men of their sins through His grace will result in men learning to forgive one another, and thereby live in peace.

4. Read verses 15-20. What did the shepherds do with the good news? What can we learn from them?

** They went to the place where the Savior was born, worshiped the Savior, and shared the good news with others. Then they were filled with joy, returning back home praising God. The end
