The House was Filled
Key Verse 03: Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
Look at verses 1-2. Describe the scene: Where did Jesus go and what was he doing there?
V3. What did Mary do? Why do you think she did this? What was the significance of the ointment? What effect did her offering have on Jesus, the house, and the people who observed it?
V4-8. Why did some people get upset? What did Jesus say? Why is it important for us to offer our lives to Jesus while we can? Why might timing be a factor?
Application: What is something that we can offer to Jesus that creates a pleasing aroma? What might we need to know about him to be able to make a sacrificial offering like the one in today's passage?
V9-11. What two reasons caused a large crowd to come to the house? Why did the chief priests make plans to put Lazarus to death as well as Jesus? What did Lazarus represent? How was Lazarus a witness of Jesus? How can we be like Lazarus?
Why do you think the offering of the ointment and the raising of Lazarus from the dead had polarized outcomes, with one group of people having joy and another group hatred? What can we learn from this?
