Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer (III)

 JESUS’ HIGH PRIESTLY PRAYER (III)

(Shepherd’s Prayer for All Believers)

John 17:20-26

Key Verse 17:20

1.

Read v. 20. What does this passage tell us about the role Jesus expects his disciples to play in fulfilling his vision?

** Serve the word of Jesus, so all would believe in Jesus.

2.

Read v. 21. In what respect is this vision a truly “daring” one? How is the world to believe that the Father sent Jesus? Why is this so (Deu 6:4; 1Jn 3:1; Mat 5:14-16)?

** All are different in all different ways such as ones background (how they grew up), educational level, intelligence level, looks, ethnicity, nationality, character, habits, likes or dislikes, etc. And there is so much division among so many. Each person is so selfish, and there are so many broken relationships.

** By all believers becoming one. This indicates that the devil’s work is to divide and destroy. The devil causes divisions, so all would hate each other, and fight each other. If Christ’s church is divided, then, unbelievers will be turned off, and stay away from church fellowships.

** The Lord God is one. He is the God of harmony. Because He is love (which seeks the highest good for others) He bestows upon his children (his believers) the Spirit of His love, so his children would form a unity of love. Then the world knows that God indeed sent Jesus, and Jesus is among them (believers).

3.

Read v. 22. What does Jesus mean by the “glory” (Eze 3:12; Jn 1:14; 1Co 6:19; 2Co 3:18; 1Pe 4:14; 1Ti 3:16)? How does this glory enable the believers to become one (Gal 5:22; 1Co 12:13)?

** God’s essential attributes like his love, mercy, grace, tenderness, etc. as demonstrated in the life of Jesus.

** When believers put trust in Jesus, Jesus gives them the Holy Spirit, who enables them to bear good fruit like love, joy, etc. and thereby come to a complete unity with other believers.

4.

Read v. 23. This passage says that the fact that all believers are brought to “complete unity” serves as evidence (or as a testimony) to the world so they would know that the Father has loved them, just as the Father has loved Jesus. What does this tell us about the work of the “love” the Father has for all believers? What does this suggest to us about the significance of this “love” (John 5:20; 1Jn 4:16)?

** Love is the bond which unites all forgiven sinners, enabling them to show mercy to each other, forgive one another, bear each other’s weaknesses, etc. and grow together in Jesus’ grace and truth.

** This love comes with the power to defeat all enemies, for love has power to conquer all enemies including the devil.

5.

Read v. 24. What does this passage tell us about the “hope” Jesus desires to be fulfilled in the lives of all believers (to come)?

** To be away from this mortal body and be at home with Jesus upon each believer’s physical death, and thereby see (or experience) Jesus’ glory as the Risen Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords. Then when Jesus comes again, Jesus will give each believer a resurrected body.

6.

Read vs. 25-26. What does the statement, “I…will continue to make you known to them”, tell us about Jesus’ on-going work after his death and resurrection? Why does he make the Father known to all who would believe in Him (26)?

** Jesus continues to pray for his believers even now. He is the High Priest praying in God’s kingdom for all believers. His prayer topic is to make God known to them.

** To form a complete unity with the Father, with the Son, and with the Holy Spirit.
