He Has Risen

The Christ Will Suffer and Rise from the Dead

Luke 24:1-53

Key Verse 46

He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day…

Introduction) We have studied about Jesus’ crucifixion in chapter 23. This chapter helps us to remind us of what is written about Jesus’ resurrection. This passage can be divided into three main parts. 1. Resurrection of Jesus(1-12), 2. Jesus appears to two disciples(13-27), 3. Jesus makes himself known to disciples(36-53) May the Lord help us to be a witness of Jesus’ resurrection.

1. Read verses 1-12. What did the women find when they came to the tomb? (v.1-3) Who appeared to them and what did they say to them? (v.4-7) What is the evidence of Jesus’ resurrection? (v.6,7) What did the women do after they came back from the tomb? (v.9) How did the apostles and all others respond? (v.11,12)

Read verses 1-12.

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took     the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

What did the women find when they came to the tomb? (v.1-3)

* They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. When they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

Jesus was crucified on Friday (Luke 23:54).

It was “Preparation Day,” and the Sabbath was about to begin- Preparation was made for keeping the Sabbath (Passover Preparation)

From sunset (down) of Friday to sundown of Saturday=Sabbath day

On the first day of the week- Sunday begins by Jewish  on Saturday.

According to John 20:1, “it was still dark”

The women: according to verse 10 and Matthew 28:60 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary (most likely the John’s mom Mark 15:40-41)- they saw Joseph rolling a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb

They were very thankful to Jesus and they were blessed to see Risen Jesus first.

They witnessed Jesus’ resurrection to 11 disciples. They influenced other women (Matthew 15:41).

Who appeared to them and what did they say to them? (v.4-7)

* Suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”

What is the evidence of Jesus’ resurrection? (v.6,7)

*He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words.

1. Resurrection faith is to rest on God’s word rather than any proof through science.

Two angels did not help the women to listen their own news rather reminded them of what they had heard from Jesus.

Their message was strictly based on what Jesus had taught.

It was not man made story but it was planned and implemented according to God’s words of authority.

Jesus' word has power to impart the truth of resurrection to our inner beings. Let's remember Jesus' words, and also remind others of Jesus' words in any circumstance or situation.

2. "He has risen!" (6a)  According to the Greek verb in this sentence, Jesus was raised  by another.

In fact, God raised Jesus from the dead (Ac 2:24a). Jesus died in obedience to God's will. Jesus' death was a once for all the sacrifice for sin (Heb 9:28).

God's justice was fully satisfied. Since the sin problem had been solved, death had no further claim on Jesus.

Peter said, "...it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him" (Ac 2:24b).

Until that time death had kept its hold on everyone who had died. Death was like an undefeated enemy.

People's sins, judged by the law, gave the power of death a grip on their souls (1 Cor 15:56). Death had clenched this grip tightly and defeated everyone.

But Jesus was different. Jesus was sinless and holy. So there was nothing for death to hold on to. The grip of death was broken by Jesus Christ.

Moreover, Jesus is God in his very nature. Death was no match for the Son of God. Jesus won the victory, disarming death's power.

What did the women do after they came back from the tomb? (v.9)

* They told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. They became witness of resurrection.

How did the apostles and all others respond? (v.11,12)

* But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

The eleven disciples were still in shock. They thought that it was nonsense. Peter got up and ran to the tomb. But he still wondered rather than being convinced fully.

John’s gospel shows that John and Peter went there together. John 20:1-9 explained the detailed step about what had happened.

In particular apostle John who is the author of John’s gospel confessed in John 20:9 that he did not understand resurrection from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.

It indicates that John and Peter were two top disciples who used to sitting next to Jesus and heavily listen what Jesus had to say.

But they had been overwhelmed by the power of death. They failed to remind of what had been taught through Jesus.

2.  Read verses 13-35. What was the problem of the two disciples and how did Jesus help them? (v.25-27, 30-31) What did they do after they recognized Jesus? (v.33-35)

Read verses 13-35.

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

What was the problem of the two disciples and how did Jesus help them? (v.25-27, 30-31)

* He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself

Jesus appeared not to Peter and John but to two runaway disciples. They had hope that Jesus would be the true Messiah.

They were most likely among 70 disciples who were sent out and experienced God’s power in Luke chapter 10.

They were aware of what had happened in Jerusalem thoroughly. But they did not believe all that the prophets have spoken.

Moses and all the Prophets = all the Scriptures concerning Jesus

They heard Jesus’ message and even followed Jesus for a while. They put their hope in Jesus. But they did not make a well tune with what Jesus was teaching.

They missed the point and interpreted Jesus’ message by their own.

Jesus had been patient over listening to them. They mentioned about Jesus’ power and teaching. But they still recognized Jesus as one of powerful prophets such as Elijah.

They might have expected that Jesus would be a political king. But he was killed by religious leaders.

Jesus had a Bible study with them in order to teach them and enlighten them again.

How was Bible study between them?

Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

There were many facts of Scripture which Jesus fulfilled through his life, death and resurrection. He is the seed of the woman who crushed Satan's head (Gen 3:15).

He is the promised offspring of Abraham and David who establishes an eternal kingdom in peace and love (Gen 12:3; 1 Sa 7:12).

He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, as well as the great High Priest who offers it (Ex 12:3; Jn 1:29; Heb 4:14).

He is the prophet like Moses (Dt 18:15; Ac 3:22).

He is the suffering servant(Isaiah 53), the establisher of a new covenant foretold by (Jeremiah 31:31-34), the good shepherd seen by (Ezekiel 34:16), the Son of Man prophesied (Daniel 7:12-13).

Jesus tied together all the Scriptures which he fulfilled as the Messiah.

It was the best Bible study ever given by Jesus directly! But Jesus elaborated what is written to remind them of the scripture.

Emmaus was located northeast 7 miles apart from Jerusalem, the meaning of the name is “Warm Spring”

Spiritually speaking they were very close to meet Jesus in person. They knew Jesus who only suffered and died on the cross. They needed a Bible teacher to guide them to all truth.

Why did Jesus have to visit them instead of 11 disciples who remained in Jerusalem?

We don’t know the reason why because Jesus is sovereign Lord and work according to his best judgment. Maybe the two disciples were teachable and open minded to repent their sins.

Those who are teachable and humble to accept the message and repent are the first come and first served by our Lord Jesus and His graceful/truthful words.

Maybe 11 disciples were not ready to accept the message of resurrection yet. Jesus prepared His witnesses such as two women and two second group disciples. And then they were compelled to witness Jesus’ resurrection to 11 disciples.

*30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

This passage shows intimate fellowship rather than lecture style. Small group Bible study and eating fellowship were very effective to penetrate into their hearts powerfully.

Their hearts were warmed (like Emmaus, warmed spring) and their eyes were opened.

They finally recognized Jesus and Jesus had no reason to be with them any longer.

What did they do after they recognized Jesus? (v.33-35)

*They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

3. Read verses 36-43. When did Jesus stand among his disciples and what did he say to them? (v.36) What was their response? (v.37) What did Jesus do to convince them that he has risen? (v.38-43)

Read verses 36-43.

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

When did Jesus stand among his disciples and what did he say to them? (v.36)

* While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

Luke does not say that Jesus walked up to them, but that he stood among them. His appearance was sudden and supernatural.

He was now the Risen Christ in his resurrection body. His first words were, “Peace be with you.” He came to give them true peace from the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

What was their response? (v.37)

*They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.

What did Jesus do to convince them that he has risen? (v.38-43)

*He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

Jesus was still the good shepherd who knew his disciples very well. He knew what they were thinking and said, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?” He even proved his resurection by eating a pieace of fish.

Jesus is the first fruit of our resurrection(1Co 15:20-22).

4. Read verses 44-53. What did he teach them concerning the Scriptures? (v.44,45) On what basis did Jesus want his disciples to believe his resurrection? (v.46) What did Jesus want his disciples to do and what did he promise? (v.47-49) How did Jesus ascend into heaven? (v.50-53)

 Read verses 44-53.

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” 50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

What did he teach them concerning the Scriptures? (v.44,45)

* Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

Jesus helped them to remind of what they had already heard many times.

Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the...

On what basis did Jesus want his disciples to believe his resurrection? (v.46)

* He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day” Jesus wanted his discipels to believe his resurection based on Scriptures.

What did Jesus want his disciples to do and what did he promise? (v.47-49)

* Repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name.

Repentance and forgiveness are not a dead end street, but a means and ways to receive glorious resurrection body like our Lord Jesus Christ. (1John 3:2)

It will be preached in Jesus’ name to all nations.

Jesus who had completed his mission on earth enthusiastically asked his disciples to be his witnesses from Jerusalem and beyond.

To witness is to explain the gospel message from the Bible. It is also to share our own personal testimony of what Jesus has done for us.

Ultimately, to witness we must give our lives to proclaim the truth of the gospel.

May the Lord help us to share this good news with young students.

How did Jesus ascend into heaven? (v.50-53)

* When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

After hearing Jesus’ resurrection message, and believing God who rules men and history, and receiving his command to be witnesses to all nations, the disciples were changed.

They had new strength. They had new vision. They could understand what God was doing and what they should do.

In conclusion) He has risen! This news is a great news to any person. Jesus appeared to two women, two young disciples, and 11 disciples. Jesus helped them to understand what is written and have a correct understanding of the scripture. Risen Jesus was not emotional, but very intellectual and serve them as the best Bible teacher. According to Jesus’ promise we have another Bible teacher so called Holy Spirit to help us to effectively serve challenging young people in our own generation. May the Lord help us to grow as Bible teachers like our Lord Jesus Christ! Amen.

One word: Jesus has risen!
