If You Hold To My Teaching…


John 8:31-59

Key Verses 8:31-32


31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”



1. Read verses 31-33.  What did Jesus say to the Jews who had believed him? (31-32)  How can we be Jesus’ disciples?  How does the truth set us free? (Ro 8:1-2; Jn 8:12)  What did their response show about them? (33)





2. Read verses 34-41.  According to Jesus, who is a slave? (34)  What is the difference between a slave and a son? (35)  Who can make you free? (36)  Why?  What shows that they are not Abraham’s descendants? (37-41)





3. Read verses 42-47.  Why didn’t they love Jesus? (42)  Who was their father according to Jesus?  Why? (43-44)  Why couldn’t they hear what God said? (45-47)





4. Read verses 48-53.  What did the Jews accuse Jesus of ? (48)  How did Jesus defend himself? (49-50)  What promise did Jesus give to those who keep his word? (51)  How did the Jews respond to Jesus’ teaching? (52-53) 





5. Read verse 54-59.  Who glorifies the Son? (54)  Why are Jesus’ words valid? (55)  What did Abraham see? (56-57; Gen 22:14)  What did Jesus declare about himself? (58; Exo 3:14)  Why did the Jews reject Jesus’ claims? (59)
