Your Covenant is Trustworthy

Your Covenant is Trustworthy

2 Samuel 7:18-29

Key Verse: 2 Samuel 7:28

“Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.”

Today’s passage is David’s thanks prayer after he heard the Lord’s promise for him and his household. The Lord promised David and his household for eternal dynasty.

1. Read verses 18-21. What does David do after hearing God’s revelation? (18a) What does David ask God? (18b) What has God spoken about concerning the house of David? (19a)  Why had God made such a decree? (19b, 20, 21)

Read verses 18-21.

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human! 20 “What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign Lord. 21 For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.

What does David do after hearing God’s revelation? (18a)

Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

He offered thanks prayer. David was so moved by the love of the Lord that he was compelled to express his thanks through prayer.

What does David ask God? (18b)

“Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?

David knew that what the Lord had done for him and his family were already more than enough for his and his family.

So David knew that he did not deserve any more of the Lord’s blessings and favor for him and his family.

What has God spoken about concerning the house of David? (19a)

19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant.

Why had God made such a decree? (19b, 20, 21)

19a “and this decree, Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human! 20 “What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign Lord. 21 For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.

Because he loved David. But ultimately it depends on the Sovereign will of the Lord. So David called, “Sovereign Lord.”

2. Read verses 22-24. How does David praise God? (22) What is David’s testimony concerning what God has done for Israel (23, 24)

2-1) Read verses 22-24.

22 “How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 23 And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 24 You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.

2-2) How does David praise God? (22)

22 “How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.

David praised God’s greatness and he praised the only true God. He is God whom David and his people heard with their own ears. He is personal God who revealed himself in Israelites’ history and in their personal lives.

2-3)  What is David’s testimony concerning what God has done for Israel (23, 24)

23 And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 24 You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.

Out of Sovereign will of God the Lord chose the Israelites as his own people and the Lord God redeemed them from Egypt and planted them in the promised land. Basically the Lord God chose the Israel as his own nation and as his own people and he cared for them by redeeming them and establishing them.

Personally this applies to each of us whom God called and chose according this sovereign will.

3. Read verses 25-29. What does David ask God to do? (25)  Why? (26) What gave David courage to pray to God? (27) What does David say concerning the covenant that God had made? (28)  What does David pray as he closes his prayer? (29)

3-1)
Read verses 25-29.

25 “And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, 26 so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight. 27 “Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. 29 Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”

3-2) What does David ask God to do? (25)

25 “And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised,

David did not demand. What he said was expression of his great thanks. It is the expression of great thanks for the Lord’s promise for him and his household.

3-3) Why? (26)

26 so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight.

It was the for the purpose of revealing God’s greatness. It was the purpose of revealing God over Israel and the house of David.

3-4) What gave David courage to pray to God? (27)

27 “Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.

The promise of the Lord gave courage David to pray. Otherwise how could he dare to pray such awesome prayer topic?

3-5) What does David say concerning the covenant that God had made? (28)

28 Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.

God’s covenant is trustworthy. Furthermore the Lord promised it personally to David.

3-6) What does David pray as he closes his prayer? (29)

29 Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”

David concluded his prayer with the Lord’s blessing for his house based on the Lord’s Sovereign will. David wanted to make sure the Lord’s blessing upon his house based on the Lord’s promise would be fulfilled. It was for the honor of the Lord.

The end.
