A Kernel of Wheat

John 12:20-50

Key Verse 24

I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

I. A kernel of wheat (20-36)

1. Read verses 20-26.  Who would like to see Jesus? (20-22)  What was Jesus’ answer? (23)  What is the principle of “a kernel of wheat”? (24)  How is it related to Jesus?  How must we follow Jesus’ example? (25)  What is the privilege for those who serve Jesus? (26)

2. Read verses 27-33.  What was the condition of Jesus’ heart at that time? (27; Mar 14:34-36)  How did he overcome his troubled heart? (27b-29)  What would happen when Jesus would be lifted up? (31-32)

3. Read verses 34-36.  What was the crowd’s understanding about the Christ? (34)  How can we become sons of light? (35-36)

II. The Jews’ continual unbelief (37-50)

4. Read verses 37-41.  What was the response of the crowd to the miraculous signs? (37)  How did their unbelief fulfill the words of Isaiah? (38-41; Isa 53:1, 3-6; Isa 6:10)

5. Read verses 42-50. Why did some who believed in Jesus not confess their faith? (42-43; Joh 5:44) What did Jesus cry out to them? (44-46) Who will judge those who reject Jesus? (47-48) Why will the word of Jesus condemn people at the last day? (49-50)
